Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350 °F.
In the bowl of a stand mixer, fitted with thewhisk attachment, add 1 cup of butter and sugar and beat until light andfluffy.
Add the vanilla extract and mix well.
Add the egg yolks, one at a time, and beatuntil well combined.
In a second bowl, add the flour, bakingpowder, baking soda, and salt. Mix well.
Slowly, add the flour mixture into the eggmixture, alternating with buttermilk, and mix until well combined.
In a clean glass bowl, add the egg whites andbeat until stiff.
Gently fold the whipped egg whites into theflour mixture.
In a Dutch oven, add the remaining butter andbrown sugar over medium-high heat and cook for about 2-3 minutes, stirringcontinuously.
Remove from the heat.
Place the apple slices across brown sugarmixture and top with the flour mixture.
Bake for approximately 30-40 minutes or untila toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Cut into equal-sized wedges and serve.
Notes
To avoid browning, place the apples in a bowl of cool salte water before using.
