Apple Upside-Down Cake

A decadent andold-fashioned apple upside-down cake... This recipe uses very simpleingredients to make this comfortable and tasty cake.

Ingredients
  

  • cups unsalted butter divided
  • 3 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 6 eggs separated
  • 3 cups cake flour
  • tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 6 apples peeled,cored and sliced

Instructions
 

  • Preheat your oven to 350 °F.
  • In the bowl of a stand mixer, fitted with thewhisk attachment, add 1 cup of butter and sugar and beat until light andfluffy.
  • Add the vanilla extract and mix well.
  • Add the egg yolks, one at a time, and beatuntil well combined.
  • In a second bowl, add the flour, bakingpowder, baking soda, and salt. Mix well.
  • Slowly, add the flour mixture into the eggmixture, alternating with buttermilk, and mix until well combined.
  • In a clean glass bowl, add the egg whites andbeat until stiff.
  • Gently fold the whipped egg whites into theflour mixture.
  • In a Dutch oven, add the remaining butter andbrown sugar over medium-high heat and cook for about 2-3 minutes, stirringcontinuously.
  • Remove from the heat.
  • Place the apple slices across brown sugarmixture and top with the flour mixture.
  •  Bake for approximately 30-40 minutes or untila toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Cut into equal-sized wedges and serve.

Notes

To avoid browning, place the apples in a bowl of cool salte water before using.
