Even if you have one of the best microwaves in your kitchen, it may need to get reset now and then. It is often due to software glitches or frozen keypad of your microwave, as they are the typical issues that frequently occur.

These general issues merely need quick fixes through resetting. Also, the most typical reason for needing to reset a microwave oven is unintended device settings.

So, microwave resetting is not a complicated process unless you face a more severe problem. You also don’t need any tools, unlike testing a microwave transformer.

Although there are various types of microwaves, the process for resetting most microwaves is the same.

Choose a time when you won’t need a micro-waved lunch, and we’ll assist you in resolving the problem by resetting your microwave.

Insider Tip: Never hit the buttons on your microwave too forcefully. It can cause the keypad to become unresponsive by jamming the button springs.

Two Simple Methods to Reset Your Microwave

To reset any modern microwave, try the below-listed methods. Following these few steps will assist you in resetting and prolonging the life of your microwave.

Method # 1: Soft Reset – How to Do Soft Reset on a Microwave?

A soft reset is the first and foremost resetting method preferred by everyone. A soft reset could be all you need to get your microwave back up and running most of the time. You should use this resetting method if you face issues such as entering the wrong cooking time or mode. Well, to do a soft reset, keep the following steps in mind:

      1. Locate & Press the Cancel or Reset Key

Locate and hit the reset/cancel key on the microwave. You should hear a beep then, and any activity on your microwave display will stop. However, if the digital display shows a lock icon, go to the following step.

      2. Hit & Hold the Cancel or Reset Key

If your microwave display shows a lock icon, you need to hit and hold the cancel/reset key for about three seconds. It automatically turns off your microwave’s child lock feature.

      3. Have a Final Test

Finally, you need to test whether the rest is done. You can do it by placing a cup of water in your microwave and setting a cook time of 30 seconds. If your microwave runs, you’re good. If your microwave’s digital control panel malfunction persists, move on to method two.

Method # 2: Hard Reset – How To Do Hard Reset on a Microwave?

Sometimes, even after soft resetting your microwave keeps malfunctioning, you need to conduct a hard reset. To accomplish it correctly, follow the steps below:

      1. Look for the Power Cord

Look for a power cord that connects your appliance power supply to a wall power socket.

      2. Remove the Power Cord of the microwave from the outlet

Once you locate the power cord, please remove it from the power outlet. You might need to seek inside a cabinet for an electrical outlet if you have an over-the-range microwave.

Warning: If you observe any signs of electrical damage or burnup surrounding the electrical outlet, don’t touch it without wearing rubber gloves.

      3. Give Your Microwave a Rest

Now, allow the microwave to cool for a few minutes before using it. It will be able to discharge as a result of this.

      4. Again, Plug-In the Microwave

If you plug your microwave back in, you may need to reset the clock and (potentially) other settings. It depends on your microwave’s type and brand. Push the clock key to set the time, enter the minutes and am/pm. Now, push the start key to initiate the clock after setting the correct time.

      5. Final Testing

Test the microwave after a hard reset to verify if it functions properly. You can do it by conducting the water test outlined in the soft reset test method above. Again, you can repeat the hard reset method if it does not work as planned.

NOTE: If even the hard reset does not address the problem, your next best step should be to get professional advice about your microwave.

      When to Reset Your Microwave

You need to reset your microwave several times to bring it back in regular working order. It’s crucial not to assume that it’s not working well because its life has ended or there is some big issue with the appliance, or that it’s simply old and you need a new microwave.

No, not all the issues with your microwave are because your appliance is damaged. The following are some typical microwave faults that may necessitate a microwave oven reset:

      • Your microwave is not heating the food appropriately
      • The microwave buttons do not operate properly
      • Your microwave is not even getting started
      • The glass turntable makes weird noises or does not turn during microwave operation
      • The microwave’s display is not showing the timer or clock accurately

Well, if you are facing such general issues, fear not. Your microwave is just calling for a quick reset. First, try a soft reset. If the issue persists, then go for a hard reset.

      Expert Tips

      • If your microwave still doesn’t function after completing the soft and hard resets, you’ll need to take your appliance to a repair store and have it looked at by an expert.
      • Keep in mind that a microwave oven has 9-10 years of life. Don’t attempt to repair a microwave if you don’t have the necessary expert knowledge and experience. You can get hurt through a fire or electricity or damage the appliance further.

      Final Thoughts

Microwave resetting is a straightforward solution to common problems that generally arise when using the appliance. Soft reset and hard rest are the only two ways to rest your appliance.

However, it doesn’t always work, and you may need to look into alternative options. If you cannot resolve the issue on your own, you should always seek the assistance of a microwave repair professional.

Also, do not push the microwave keys too hard. The button springs can be jammed, causing the keypad to become unresponsive. So, keep an eye on the issue your microwave is facing and select the resetting accordingly.
